  5. The regular meeting of the Lanark County Genealogical Society was
  6. held on October 5, 1994 at the Mill of Kintail Gatehouse near
  7. Almonte, Ont.
  8.

  17. The President opened the meeting at 8pm and welcomed all and
  18. asked those members who were attending for the first time to
  19. introduce themselves and indicate their families of interest.
  20.  
  21. Moved by Mildred Livingston and seconded by Georgina J. Doe that
  22. the minutes be approved as printed.  Motion passed.
  23.  
  24. The treasurer Helen Gillan reported 3 new members and a bank
  25. balance of $1917.33 after expenditures of $100.12 for stamps and
  26. $20.00 for rental of the Mill of Kintail facilities.  The cost of
  27. printing the last newsletter is still outstanding.
  28.  
  29. Moved by Bob Sargeant and seconded by Ernest Miller that the
  30. Treasurer purchase 500 membership cards.  Motion passed.
  31.  
  32. Last meeting, members of the LCGS presented our President,
  33. Marilyn Snedden with a gavel in appreciation of her efforts in
  34. printing the newsletter, handling the mail, leading our club and
  35. just being Marilyn.  Thanks Marilyn, we appreciate your efforts
  36. and will also award you with an opportunity to continue for
  37. another year!
  38.  
  39. Marilyn Snedden reviewed the queries in the newsletter to
  40. determine if there were any outstanding.
  41.  
  42. It is planned to package an information package for new members. 
  43. This package would contain a list of libraries, archives and
  44. publications pertaining to Lanark County.  We would like a map of
  45. the County and are looking for a suitable one to enclose with the
  46. package.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
  47.

  53. Ernest Miller reported that the draft of Elmwood Cemetery, Perth
  54. has been sent to Kingston OGS for printing and includes 3377
  55. names. (***ED. NOTE - please see further on in newsletter under
  56. "publications available from Kingston OGS" for information as the
  57. aforementioned publication is now available).  He is presently
  58. trying to identify the new and old parts of the Pioneer Cemetery,
  59. so that the various internments of Catholic, Anglican and
  60. Presbyterian may be established.  Until 1872, all three
  61. denominations were buried in the same cemetery, after that time,
  62. cemeteries were established for each denomination.  If anyone is
  63. aware of the original boundaries, Ernie would be pleased to hear
  64. from you.

  66. Bob Sargeant reported that the Highland Line Cemetery has been
  67. updated and copies are available from Mary Kirkham, Clerk
  68. Treasurer.  Theresa McKenna will pick up copies for our library.
  69.  
  70. Ed Livingston reported that he has acquired a lineage chart for
  71. the MacEwen family that moved from the Harper settlement to
  72. Pennsylvania.  If anyone is interested, please contact Ed
  73. Livingston.
  74.  
  75. Marilyn then introduced John Dunn who have a most enlightening
  76. talk on why the Scots emigrated to the Carolinas and Canada. 
  77. This was most informative and connected the various battles and
  78. steps in the Industrial Revolution.  A thank you to John, we
  79. really appreciated your talk and learned a lot from your
  80. presentation.

  99. SMITH- I am anxious to learn more about the family of John SMITH,
  100. who arrived on the ship Earl of Buckinghamshire in 1821.  John
  101. was accompanied by a wife, two boys and two girls under 12 year. 
  102. He was located on East Lot 12, Conc 10 Ramsay Twp.  Is it
  103. possible that he had a daughter Mary, born ca 1810, who married
  104. Robert SMITH of the Twp. of Huntley on Dec 29, 1833?

  116. Perth and Smiths Falls.  They have been transcribed from NAC
  117. Microfilms C-1042 and C-1043 by Robert E. Sargeant and compiled
  118. and typeset by J.R. Ernest Miller.  Each is arranged
  119. alphabetically according to the surname of the head of the
  120. household, with family members listed following the head.  A
  121. person in a given household whose surname is not the same as that
  122. of the head is listed separately in the alphabetic sequence. 
  123. Indicated prices include mailing and taxes.  (Orders mailed to

  205. Terry Bygrove of Young's Point, Ont. who passed away suddenly on
  206. Aug. 12, 1994.

  213.                     The Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid

  216.      The OCFA computer database is an index to Ontario cemetery
  217. transcriptions. The first version of the database had about
  218. 30,000 names indexed. By the second version, released in February
  219. 1994, the database had grown to nearly 100,000 entries. The third
  220. version, which should be available on Certa Cito by the time you
  221. read this, will have 353,000 names. Work on the fourth version
  222. has already begun.
  223.  
  224.      I found the second release of the OCFA to be very useful.
  225. Before discovering the OCFA, I spent most of a day fruitlessly
  226. searching cemetery transcriptions in the OGS Kingston Branch
  227. library (in the Kingston public library) with little result.
  228. After locating some probable ancestors with the help of the OCFA,
  229. it was easy to find the right transcriptions on a subsequent
  230. visit. While OCFA2 is much less complete than OCFA3, it has good
  231. coverage of the early cemeteries in the Bay of Quinte and
  232. Kingston areas.  If you have ancestors who moved around Ontario
  233. and you are not sure where they died, the OCFA will make your
  234. task much easier.

  236.      Anna Joan Buxton began transcribing cemeteries and
  237. collecting transcriptions by other workers in the 1970's. She
  238. acquired a very large collection of transcriptions and decided to
  239. index her  holdings to make them more usable. Others submitted
  240. their own indices and the OCFA became a very large project. She
  241. now lives in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, and is part of
  242. a team working on expanding the database.
  243.  
  244.      The concept of a publicly available database indexing
  245. cemeteries was met with suspicion by some members of the OGS when
  246. it first appeared. However, as the overwhelming usefulness of
  247. this approach became apparent, the OGS has approved of the
  248. project. Publicly available databases will play an increasingly
  249. important role the future of genealogy.
  250.  
  251.      There is a need for volunteers to continue the work towards
  252. the next (fourth) version of the OCFA. Ron Demaray reports that
  253. he already has 75,000 entries that were too late to be included
  254. in OCFA3 but will be in OCFA4. To quote Ron "There are only
  255. 300,000+ entries in Version Three and I would guess that it
  256. represents less than 15% of all available Ontario cemetery
  257. indices.  For this version there were only six branches of the
  258. OGS who are officially contributing data.  While each of these
  259. six intend to submit all of their cemetery indices,  I don't
  260. think any of them were able to input 50% simply because of the
  261. sheer size and amount of work required!  Obviously the goal is
  262. 100%, and as more and more OGS branches AND just plain ole
  263. volunteers like you and I, enter the indices of transcripts that
  264. we own, we will edge another cemetery closer to that total."
  265.

  269.      The database consists of the names, cemetery name and
  270. location of 353,000 interments in Ontario. It does not contain
  271. transcriptions or dates, but it does tell the reader which
  272. county, township and cemetery contains a given name. The database
  273. also includes the soundex code for each surname, which makes it
  274. easier to find spelling variants.
  275.  
  276.      Because of the huge size of the database, it has been
  277. divided alphabetically. OCFA2 was split into eight different
  278. files. OCFA3 will contain a much larger number. You only need to
  279. download the files that contain the names you are interested in -
  280. for example, OCFA3-A.ZIP and OCFA3-B.ZIP will contain surnames
  281. beginning with the letters "A" and "B" respectively. The
  282. individual files have been compressed in ZIP format and contain a
  283. section of the database and information on how to use it The OCFA
  284. database is in comma delimited ASCII, a very convenient format.
  285. They can be viewed with any file viewing program (word
  286. processors, or programs such as "LIST", "XTREE" and many others).
  287. It will save time if the program has search capabilities. To make
  288. maximum use of the database, the files can be loaded into a
  289. database program. This will make it very easy to access the data.
  290.  
  291.      If you need help downloading and using the database, just
  292. ask. It is very simple, once you have done it a few times, but it
  293. is confusing at first.
  294.  
  295.      I was interested to read, in a message from Anna Joan Buxton
  296. to Jim Carter, the result of her encountering our L.C.G.S.
  297. newsletter on her local BBS in Victoria B.C. "After I finished
  298. reading it, I sent off a year's membership fee and a donation, to
  299. Lanark County Genealogical Society, along with the names I'm
  300. searching in Perth."
  301.

  303. The documentation with OCFA2 provided a comprehensive description
  304. of the database, as well as suggestions about how to use it.
  305. Messages from Ron Demaray, Anna Joan Buxton, and others gave
  306. information about the history and continuing progress of the
  307. project. Stuart Wright wrote an very useful article on the OCFA
  308. for the newsletter of the Brant County Branch (OGS) that he
  309. posted in the Canadian Genealogy Echo.

  506. Algonquin College, 7 Craig St., Perth on Wednesday, November 2,
  507. 1994.  The library will open at 7pm, with the business meeting
  508. commencing at 8pm.  Our guest speaker for the evening will be
  509. John Hay, chair of the Scottish Research Group of the Ottawa
  510. Branch, OGS.  Mr. Hay will share his experiences with us with
  511. respect to researching Scottish records.
